Dr Joshua Esler will be giving a talk in Canberra as part of a panel focused on preserving Tibetan culture and identity. Other participants in the panel will include a Tibetan member of parliament of the Tibetan Government in Exile, and the head of the Canberra Tibetan Association. Dr Esler’s talk will focus on the importance of Tibetan being used as a living language that is integrated into every aspect of life, for its ongoing propagation and use as a fundamental building block for a free Tibet in the future. This includes every aspect of education, wherein Tibetan is used as a medium of instruction. Dr Esler’s talk will outline the Australian Association of Tibetan and Himalayan Studies’ proposal to deliver higher education programs that will use Tibetan as the medium of instruction either exclusively (for the proposed intensive one year of Tibetan language and cultural learning program), or conjointly with English (for the proposed BA in Tibetan Studies). His talk is based on his own experience of learning other languages, particularly Hebrew, in a higher education setting, wherein the only medium of instruction was the target language itself. It is hoped that this integrative approach to language learning and its importance for the building of a free Tibet moving forward will inspire and challenge the Tibetan families and youth present at the event.
